EXPLORE THE HISTORY

WELL GREEN

Written by Keith Cooper, Local Historian
The relationship of ‘Well Green’ to its immediate landscape differs from that of almost every other 12th century toft, or building plot, in the village. Instead of a long, narrow, ‘croft-field’ immediately behind it, ‘Well Green’ farmstead is positioned at the edge of an irregular, roughly circular enclosure called ‘Park’. This kind of enclosure may be evidence of an earlier structure and although the farmstead here will have been rebuilt on more than one occasion, it is possible that Well Green was the site of a pre-Conquest farmstead.
